Having coached boys soccer for several years at Cottonwood, the opportunity popped up for Brylee Harvest to take the lead job at Taylorsville last summer. 

“I was literally coaching and preparing for another season with Cottonwood just two weeks ago. Ultimately it came down to starting my life after much sacrifice and putting myself second for many years,” said Coach Harvest last summer in an interview with City Journals. 

The longtime Cottonwood coach and alum had just received his degree from the University of Utah a few months before that. 

“I never wanted to leave Cottonwood and wish nothing but the best for them,” he added. “I was looking to transition into a teaching role for about a year and unfortunately, 

Cottonwood was not in a situation to provide a teaching job in the timeline I was looking for.” 

So the Cottonwood alum accepted the offer from Taylorsville to become its boys and girls coach, along with a position as an educator. 

The wild part? Coach Harvest wouldn’t be stalking the sidelines alongside his brother Bryce, who served as Brylee’s assistant on Cottonwood’s boys—and then the two flipped roles during the girls’ season. 

The other catch? Taylorsville’s girls soccer season was set to begin within weeks of Coach Harvest’s hiring. 

“It's certainly been surreal putting on blue and taking over the girls program only a month out from the tryouts,” said Coach Harvest last summer. 

The new Taylorsville coach still guided the girls to a respectable 6-8 record good for fourth place in a rugged Class 5A Region 4, and earned a No. 20 ranking and state playoff berth—led by three girls that netted eight, six and five goals, respectively. 

Coach Harvest also led Taylorsville’s boys to their first win in just his second game on the job March 5 versus Roy in a 1-0 thriller. 

The Warriors boys also grabbed their first win in region play March 13 in a wild shootout, according to Coach Harvest.  

“The game had the best high school soccer has to offer. From the passion, drama, and school pride in a rivalry, the atmosphere was outstanding,” said Taylorsville’s coach. “Going up two goals then conceding 4 straight goals tested our group to the brink. Kearns scored the 4th goal to go up by two goals with just 7:35 minutes left.

I think about everyone in the whole stadium thought the game was over except our boys,” remarked Coach Harvest. “The amount of resiliency our boys showcased and the relentlessness to not quit or give in proved all the difference in the game. We knew when we got those two goals late to force overtime, we carried all the momentum heading into overtime and eventually PKs.” 

Taylorsville (3-6, 2-4 Region 4) took a 4-2 victory in penalty kicks over the Cougs in this rivalry tilt affectionately nicknamed “The War On 54,” signifying the 5400 South highway that both schools sit on, between the two adjacent towns. 

The Warriors lads also grabbed a 2-1 win by scoring late in the second half at West Jordan March 26, marking the first game Taylorsville has won on the road this season.  

For Coach Harvest, even if he had to leave his alma mater Cottonwood for professional reasons, this has marked an exciting time in his life. 

“It's been fun being in the building this year as a teacher and getting to spend more time with the kids outside of just soccer season,” said Coach Harvest, who led the Cottonwood boys to several state playoff appearances during his time there.

The team is coached by Brylee Harvest and assisted by Leonardo Lazarte.
