Taylorsville High School qualified five wrestlers of the 6A state wrestling tournament. They captured one state championship.

“I feel proud of what I have accomplished this season,” senior Caleb Schulte said. “I feel I have a certain performance level expected for me as an upperclassman.”

Schulte captured a state championship in the 6A 160-pound division, held Feb. 8–9 at Utah Valley University. 

Schulte is a multi-sport athlete. He is a middle infielder for the Warriors baseball team. He also played cornerback for the football team in the fall. 

He won the school’s first state wrestling championship since Roy Nash in 2013. Schulte placed third last season.

He defeated Harrison Sperry from Pleasant Grove 3-2 in the championship match. Schulte came into the state championship ranked second in his weight class by wrestleutah.com.  

Schulte earned a No. 1 seed coming into the two-day tournament by taking first place in the 6A division B qualifier. 

At the state meet, he defeated Junior Rubio (Granger) in a technical fall 18-3. He then pinned Tyler Long (Weber), and in the quarterfinals he defeated Trendon Done (Davis) 6-2. 

Schulte placed second this season at the Rockwells Battle of the Brave, and he won his weight class at the Desert Storm Classic and Capitol City Classic. 

Warrior junior Braden Henson placed second in state. He lost in the championship match to American Fork’s Josh Bartholomew 6-4. He came into the state tournament ranked third by wrestleutah.com. 

Henson qualified for the state tournament by winning the 6A 145-pound division B qualifier.

At the state meet, he defeated Reed Taylor (Pleasant Grove) 7-0 and Chase Walker (Hunter) 11-7.In the quarterfinals he defeated Dan Waddoups from Davis 9-8. 

Sophomore Kade Gray lost his initial match in the state tournament but managed a victory in the consolation round.

Seniors Malachi Novosel and Marcus Witt also qualified for the tournament but did not score team points.

Taylorsville finished in 12th place overall with 46.5 points. Pleasant Grove won the state championship with 283.0 

In the regular season, the Warriors defeated Cyprus 48-34. In the match Witt, Schulte, Novosel and Gray combined with Kaden Robinson, Biak Nung, Matthew Valora and Sharp Loertscher for Warrior individual victories.

Their region competition was much more difficult. The Warriors finished in fifth place in Region 3. West Jordan placed ahead of them in fourth.

Taylorsville’s head coach is Shawn McNiven. The Warriors roster includes more than 30 wrestlers.

Wrestling ranked seventh overall nationally in boys participation, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Football remains the No. 1 sport for boys. The number of boys participating in high school sports increased nationally by nearly 18,000 this year.
